The U.S. Department of Labor awarded $10.4 million to Northwest Vista College to help expand access Workforce Pell across Texas colleges. Northwest Vista College was awarded a $10.4 million by the U.S. Department of Labor grant to lead a consortium of Texas community colleges in building the data infrastructure needed to apply for access to Workforce Pell Grants. It comes at a time when colleges have been awarded a long-awaited opportunity to offer federal financial aid to students seeking non-academic training or certificates. But the application to qualify for this federal aid has become an added barrier for most. “All over Texas, community colleges, like the colleges in the Alamo Colleges District, have programs that meet on paper all the criteria for Workforce Pell eligibility.
They fit the right time boundaries. They line up to jobs that if our learners could get them would pay them and their families sustaining wages,” said George Gittinger, vice president of college Services at Northwest Vista College. “But the colleges themselves don’t have the data infrastructure or the internal knowledge about lining up all the things that are required to demonstrate that you are actually eligible,” he continued.
