SDG&E Prepares For Prolonged Heat Wave, Increased Energy Demand Patch
San Diego Gas & Electric is monitoring the power grid as prolonged heat, dry conditions and offshore winds move into the region. SAN DIEGO, CA — San Diego Gas & Electric is preparing for increased electricity demand as a prolonged heat wave is expected to bring potentially triple-digit temperatures to parts of the region beginning Friday. The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat warning for parts of San Diego and Orange counties through Thursday evening. Temperatures could reach around 90 degrees near the coast and climb into the upper 90s to mid-100s in the inland valleys. SDG&E said it is monitoring weather, energy demand and grid conditions and positioning crews and resources to respond to potential equipment or service issues.
The utility is also asking customers to consider reducing or shifting nonessential electricity use between 4 and 9 p.m., when demand is typically highest. Customers can conserve energy by pre-cooling homes earlier in the day, raising thermostats a few degrees when safe to do so, closing blinds and curtains, using fans and delaying use of major appliances until after 9 p.m. Forecasters are also expecting dry conditions and offshore winds to develop later this week and strengthen through the weekend.
