Madison Common Council votes to fire independent police monitor Spectrum News
It comes following a memo issued by the city attorney about possible violations by Independent Police Monitor Aeiramique Glass. MADISON, Wis. — After a marathon common council meeting in Madison that started Tuesday night, the common council voted early Wednesday morning to fire the city’s interim independent police monitor. The firing stems from possible violations by Independent Police Monitor Aeiramique Glass, which were laid out in a memo by the city attorney’s office in August. The city attorney cited issues like hiring outside contractors to assist with city investigations without a city-approved contract and retaining outside legal services without returning a signed contract.
He argued in the memo that the independent police monitor office is separate from police, but still a city agency and therefore needs to follow those rules. Glass had disputed the allegations and accused the city attorney’s office of “making up the rules as they go as a point of control.” Tuesday’s common council meeting lasted more than 12 hours, with the final vote 14-6 in favor of terminating Glass’ appointment.
