NWS says no tornado but strong winds at San Clemente golf course Spectrum News
A weather service survey team was sent to the golf course to make the determination if a tornado had touched down. SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. — The National Weather Service’s San Diego office on Thursday confirmed damage at the San Clemente Golf Course was caused by straight-line winds and not a tornado as initially believed to have happened. An initial report received around noon Thursday said officials were looking at suspected damage, and cellphone video showed extensive damage to numerous trees on the golf course.
In a statement to Spectrum News, the NWS San Diego said, “Straight-line winds are strong, non-rotating wind gusts that rush down from a thunderstorm and blast outward when they hit the ground, just like water splashing out when you drop a bucket on the sidewalk.”
