Oct. 28 (Asia Today) — Japan plans to make "deterrence by denial" a central element of its defense strategy, seeking to convince potential adversaries that an attack on the country would fail to achieve its military objectives. The approach would involve expanding long-range missile and drone capabilities to repel invasions while strengthening the defense industry's ability to maintain weapons and ammunition production during prolonged conflicts. The Yomiuri Shimbun reported Wednesday, citing multiple government officials, that Japan has begun incorporating the concept into revisions of its three principal national security documents scheduled for completion by the end of the year.

The documents are the National Security Strategy, which establishes the country's overall diplomatic and security direction, the National Defense Strategy, which outlines military priorities, and the Defense Buildup Program, which sets equipment procurement and investment plans. Deterrence by denial aims to prevent conflict by convincing potential aggressors that committing troops and equipment would not produce the desired outcome. To achieve this, Japan plans to accelerate the development and deployment of long-range missiles and unmanned systems capable of striking invading vessels from considerable distances. The strategy would also focus on making it more difficult for potential adversaries to conduct military operations in waters
