JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 49-year-old man was arrested in connection with a shooting that happened during a fight over a gun at the Red Roof Inn on Youngerman Circle, according to his arrest report. The report said Kortez Ridgeway was arrested Oct. 1 after Darnell Evans was shot in the hip during a scuffle over a handgun at the inn on Youngerman Circle. According to the report, Evans told police that three people were outside of his room making noise.

When he asked them to leave, the group “rushed” him, and Ridgeway pointed a gun at him, the report said. That led to the two men wrestling over the gun, causing it to go off and injure Evans during the scuffle. When Evans got a hold of the gun, he emptied the live rounds of it, the report said. Hotel surveillance cameras caught parts of the incident, and Evan’s girlfriend was able to give police Ridgeway’s description. Ridgeway was charged with attempted second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. She's navigating the digital world of journalism one story — and interview — at a time.
