CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – Statewide election results in North Carolina will be delayed Tuesday night due to polling issues in four counties, according to the North Carolina State Board of Elections. Election officials said polling hours will be extended up to 8:15 p.m. across precincts in Columbus, Hertford, Lenoir, and Wilson counties. As a result, statewide race results were not expected to be posted until all polls close. Polls were originally scheduled to close at 7:30 p.m.
but were extended due to computer issues at polling sites. State law requires all polls across North Carolina to close before any statewide results can be publicly reported. Anyone in line by 7:30 p.m. is permitted to vote a regular ballot, while voters arriving during the extension period must cast provisional ballots. Here are the voting time extensions for the precincts that experienced issues leading to voting delays: Roughly one-third of North Carolina’s registered voters cast ballots during the early voting period, leaving millions eligible to vote on Election Day. To help get Carolina residents ready to vote, WBTV streamed election explainers on each Tuesday in October. Darrell Greene
