Republican U.S. Sen. Ashley Moody narrowly defeated Democratic state Rep. Angie Nixon to serve the final two years of Marco Rubio’s Senate term. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Republican U.S. Sen. Ashley Moody narrowly defeated Democratic state Rep. Angie Nixon to serve the final two years of Marco Rubio’s Senate term. Moody, a former Florida attorney general, was appointed by Gov. Ron DeSantis in January 2025 after Rubio resigned to become secretary of state. “Throughout this campaign I said that this election would come down to freedom versus socialism. Well, Florida chose freedom,” Moody said at her election night watch party in Tampa. Nixon, a Jacksonville Democrat who has served in the Florida House since 2020, won her party’s nomination in an upset over retired Army Lt.

Col. Alex Vindman. Moody defeated three other Republicans for her party’s nomination. On Tuesday, Nixon failed to capture Panhandle voters, and her initial lead slipped as more ballots were returned throughout the evening. During her concession speech on election night, Nixon vowed to continue to fight for “every day hardworking Floridians” at her watch party in Jacksonville. “I know there are a lot of people in this room and across the state that are hurting right now. But I’m an organizer, not a politician, and organizers don’t quit on the mission because one option closes.”
