World's tallest women's college basketball player makes her debut for Texas Tech

It’s officially a new era for women’s college basketball after Thursday night’s debut of 7-foot-1, 21-year-old Nigerian Stephanie Okechukwu at Texas Tech.

Okechukwu, who is classified as a sophomore, had six points, 10 rebounds and three blocks in 21 minutes as Tech won easily 64-37 over Charlotte. The Nigerian tower made her presence felt early in the game when a Charlotte player went up for a simple put-back only to get absolutely stuffed.

Could we be looking at a future Angel Reese stopper? It’s early, but fans know they’re looking at a force under the basket. “Someone tell her to start doing the finger wag after every block,” one fan wrote on Steph’s Instagram as a throwback to Dikembe Mutombo’s signature move after a block.

According to her bio, Okechukwu was born in Nigeria and then somehow ended up playing high school basketball in Japan. In YouTube videos posted earlier this year, the Texas Tech center is seen dominating what looks like high school basketball. In one of the videos, Steph’s team wins 119-43.

On Wednesday, Tech announced that the NCAA had granted Okechukwu four years of eligibility. “I think about this every day,” Okechukwu said in a social media video.

“It was obviously huge for us,” Tech women’s basketball coach Krista Gerlich told the media this week. “I feel like the NCAA did a really great thing here because it is for the right reasons. We were expecting two (years of eligibility), we were hoping for three, and to be blessed with four is just out of this world.”

Why was there a question about Okechukwu’s eligibility? It’s unclear. “She hasn’t played college basketball,” Gerlich promised.

How does a 7-foot-1 Nigerian, by way of Japan, with developed skills just show up in the U.S. out of thin air? That’s a great question.
