Top lawyer in DOJ’s National Security Division abruptly resigns CBS News
Attorney General Todd Blanche announced Eisenberg’s departure on X, thanking him for “strengthening our nation’s ability to address threats, both foreign and domestic.” Eisenberg was the second assistant attorney general to resign that week, following Civil Rights Division chief Harmeet Dhillon, who stepped down Thursday after previously notifying the White House of her plans. Jason Reding Quiñones, the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Florida, also resigned Friday. Eisenberg had maintained a comparatively low public profile while the National Security Division lost a large number of career staff over the past year.
The division manages the department’s counterterrorism and counterintelligence work, export-control enforcement and reviews of foreign investments in U.S. companies. It also advises or approves many national-security cases brought by U.S. attorney’s offices. Late last year, the division oversaw congressionally mandated redactions of investigative files connected to Jeffrey Epstein. The review expanded to include the FBI, Criminal Division and Manhattan U.S. Attorney’s Office, with 400 attorneys examining about 5.2 million pages. Victims criticized releases that disclosed names and personal details, while members of Congress questioned redactions involving possible unindicted co-conspirators.
