MWR returns to Facebook after Army authorizes social media policy exemption

Garrisons are allowed to operate one unified MWR social media presence along with content from the BOSS program on channels like Facebook. Army Morale, Welfare and Recreation offers a range of facilities and support programs for soldiers and their families, covering fitness and recreation to child care and youth services. (Facebook of Rheinland-Pfalz Army MWR – Kaiserslautern) An Army quality of life program that provides a variety of activities and services for soldiers and their families around the world is returning to social media after receiving exemptions from a ban the service instituted a few months ago. Jesse Tolleson, deputy undersecretary of the Army, approved the waiver this week for Morale, Welfare and Recreation, said Mark Heeter, a spokesman for Installation Management Command-Europe, on Friday.

Under the waiver, garrisons are allowed to operate one unified MWR social media presence that also integrates content from the Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers program, also known as BOSS, on authorized social media channels like Facebook. The move to reauthorize use of the accounts was a “proactive adjustment” to better support soldiers and their families, Army spokesman Lt. Col. Orlandon Howard said. “The Army identified reduced awareness of the recreation, community service, and quality-of-life programs that MWR offers to single soldiers, Army families, and community members,” Howard wrote in an emailed statement on Friday.
