A Vermont-based newspaper company has been bought up by the Colorado parent of the Portland Press Herald, confirming the nadir of its “local news” claim in northern New England. The Stowe Reporter, News & Citizen, The Other Paper, The Citizen and the Shelburne News are part of the deal. The trust said it is buying the news group “for a nominal fee” it didn’t specify. The papers will “continue to provide enterprising hyperlocal journalism for their communities,” according to Tom Wiley, trust CEO. “Hyperlocal” Vermont news run by a company in Denver, Colorado gives new meaning to “local.” The trust three years ago bought Maine’s largest news conglomerate in what Semafor described as the emergence of “an unlikely and asymmetric battlefield for big American political money.”
