Thousands of flights across the United States are delayed or canceled after an FAA equipment outage prompted ground stops at several airports in the Northeast. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Six Jacksonville flights have been canceled after an FAA equipment outage prompted ground stops at five major airports in the Northeast. According to FlightAware, more than 4,400 flights have been delayed and nearly 640 have been canceled within, into, or out of the United States. All six canceled Jacksonville flights are tied to either Newark or Philadelphia — two airports at the center of the disruption.

The FAA says a fiber cable was accidentally cut at a construction site in New Jersey. That cut knocked out a tower in Philadelphia responsible for radar approach and air traffic control operations, triggering a cascade of ground stops across the region. Philadelphia International Airport is among the hardest hit. Delays there are averaging three and a half hours, according to reports.
