CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Board of Education voted to remove Superintendent Crystal Hill on Tuesday night. School board chair Stephanie Sneed also stepped down as chair but will stay on the board. The board later voted Deputy Superintendent Melissa Balknight as acting superintendent. The board called for the need to make "bold changes" in its 5-4 vote to remove Hill. Board member Charlitta Hatch supported the decision, saying "to say enough is enough" and to focus on the students.

"In doing this, are we really thinking about our children, our communities, our families?" board member Lenora Shipp asked. The board voted to place Hill on temporary paid leave in June, citing manners of administrative and operational oversight. The board then voted to reinstate her in August. The Mecklenburg County district attorney also asked the State Bureau of Investigation to conduct an informal inquiry into financial irregularities involving CMS. Gregory "Dee" Rankin will take over as chair of the board.
