ASU hockey coach on leave after outdoor workout puts player on life support
An Arizona State University hockey coach was put on leave on Wednesday after one of his players collapsed during an outdoor workout last month. That player, a sophomore defenseman, is now on life support, with his family and teammates calling for more accountability. TRANSCRIPT FOR: “ASU HOCKEY COACH ON LEAVE AFTER OUTDOOR WORKOUT PUTS PLAYER ON LIFE SUPPORT” 21-year-old Matthew Mayich remains in a coma, more than a month after he collapsed in August during what teammates called a military-style training session outside in the Arizona heat. Oh, we were devastated. Devastated, heartbroken, shocked. His parents say he suffered a heat stroke. After an internal investigation, Arizona State University said the school "athletic trainer assessed his condition and began applying iced towels and cool water to him," but his teammates say the school isn't telling the whole story.
Do the players you represent feel comfortable coming forward publicly? No, absolutely not. Attorney Tim Casey represents seven ASU hockey players who wrote an anonymous letter, fearing retaliation. They allege "Matthew received no water" and "the session continued after some of us showed signs of distress, including vomiting." I decline to answer any questions regarding August 20. At a news conference before head coach Greg Powers was put on leave, he was asked about Mayich on life support. [INAUDIBLE]
