The Fire Poppy Project says one-third of structures that survived the fire have yet to be remediated, due to cost. LOS ANGELES — According to the Fire Poppy Project, an Altadena-based organization that offers smoke remediation, one-third of the homes that survived the Eaton Fire still have not been remediated largely due to cost. When James and Stephanie Dangerfield moved back into their Altadena home a few months after the Eaton fire, their daughter and grandchildren had serious concerns about smoke and soil contamination. “Anything in the house, the drapes, the furniture had sort of taken on all of the smoke smell,” Stephanie Dangerfield said. Though the Dangerfields had insurance, it wasn’t enough to cover the costs of this kind of smoke and soil remediation.
Watching teams work on whole-home remediation, James Dangerfield was in awe. “What’s happening now, I would never have been able to afford that kind of thing being done,” he said. The California Fire Foundation was able to step in with a $300,000 grant that was given to two Altadena-based remediation companies. Fire Poppy Project’s Operation Bunny Suits addresses indoor environmental health by removing hazardous smoke contamination from homes; while Dena Soil Project restores wildfire-impacted soil that tests positive for things like high levels of heavy metals, hydrocarbons and possible asbestos from old structures.
