Tennessee’s failed attempt to execute Christa Gail Pike has brought renewed attention to how states carry out death sentences, including Georgia, where the history of capital punishment stretches back nearly three centuries.Pike survived an attempted lethal injection Wednesday after receiving two doses of pentobarbital, according to her attorneys. Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee ordered an independent review and canceled the state’s remaining scheduled execution for 2026. However, the Georgia Department of Corrections’ August 2026 statistical report counts 33 people under death sentences: 32 men and one woman.
