Tense protests surround Palestine Fest in suburban Bridgeview NBC 5 Chicago
A celebration of Palestinian culture was met with tense protests in Bridgeview on Sunday. Thousands turned out for Palestine Fest at SeatGeek Stadium in the south suburb, which is often referred to as "Little Palestine," because of its large Palestinian-American community. The fourth annual event featured live music, traditional dances, food, local vendors and family activities. Organizers said it was a chance to honor their heritage, keep Palestinian identity and traditions alive and bring the community together. "Palestinian fest is not only for Palestinians. It's open to everyone. Everyone is welcome to celebrate, to enjoy and to be with us in celebration," said Dr. Hatem Bazian, chair of American Muslims for Palestine.
Outside of the stadium, protesters and counterprotesters faced off while police and security kept a close watch. Demonstrations included a protest by far-right activist Jake Lang and others. While the group called it a “peaceful Crusader Rally,” some protesters wore military-style gear and held up anti-Palestinian messages. Amid the demonstrations, two people received medical treatment after being hit with projectiles, Mayor Steven Landek said. “Palestine Fest in Bridgeview has been an overwhelmingly positive day, filled with celebration of Palestinian culture and community.
