IAI Among Finalists to Develop Low-Cost Patriot Interceptor Israel Defense
The U.S. Army has selected 30 finalists under a program designed to develop low-cost interceptors and associated components for the Patriot air defense system. Thirty companies advanced to the finals of a U.S. Army program to develop cheaper alternatives for the Patriot air defense system, including Israel Aerospace Industries and international contractors. According to a report by Overt Defense, the complete interceptor category includes prominent defense industry players, among them RTX—the original manufacturer of the Patriot missile—alongside Anduril, AeroVironment, QinetiQ, UDD Tech, Wardstone, Greenjets, Furientis, AEON Industries, and AirX Robotics with its Katana system. The broad initiative focuses on reducing high interception costs and expanding the military's defense supplier base by integrating new technologies from established contractors alongside emerging players in missiles and advanced air defense.
The competitive program comprises four distinct core categories, the largest of which is dedicated entirely to developing a complete interceptor alongside compatible fire control systems, with 10 finalists chosen to compete. This is the only category in which the original manufacturer faces newer competitors directly. In addition, seven companies qualified as finalists in the low-cost solid rocket motor category, including Northrop Grumman, L3Harris, General Dynamics OTS, Ursa Major, X-Bow Systems, Australia's DefendTex, and the UK's Cambridge Aerospace. In the low-cost seeker category, six candidates were selected, including Leonardo DRS, Toyon, Technology Service Corporation, and
