Disabled veterans take part in hunt at Jackson County’s Camp Liberty WILX
Disabled veterans from across Michigan are at Camp Liberty this week for the Independence Disabled Veteran Hunt. BROOKLYN, Mich. (News 10) – Disabled veterans from across Michigan are at Camp Liberty this week for the Independence Disabled Veteran Hunt. Camp Liberty sits on 135 acres of woods, fields, wetlands and water. The property is a place where veterans, active-duty military members and first responders can find community and reconnect with the outdoors regardless of the physical or mental challenges they face. Veterans living with mobility challenges, PTSD, traumatic brain injuries and other health conditions are hunting on the property this week with help from guides. The goal of the event is to make outdoor experiences more accessible while improving quality of life for those who have served.
Michael Worcniak, a veteran and physician, said Camp Liberty has been life-changing for him. “My wife passed away but this is my new family. And, I had a chance to get back into hunting again after many years, and at age of 81, I got my first deer out here, which is enormously exciting,” Worcniak said. Camp Liberty has been leasing the land for $1 a year since 2012. The organization now has the opportunity to purchase the property at a discounted price and is ramping up fundraising efforts to make that happen.
