Pentagon Invests in Genetically Engineered Chemicals for Military Systems Israel Defense
According to a report in Breaking Defense, the Pentagon has awarded a $21 million contract to California-based biotechnology startup Biosphere to establish an advanced biomanufacturing facility with a capacity of 20,000 liters. The U.S. Department of Defense awarded a $21 million contract to California-based startup Biosphere to construct an advanced biomanufacturing facility producing critical materials for weapons and defense infrastructure. U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Chemical Biological Center The facility will use genetically engineered microorganisms to produce essential chemicals for military supplies and combat systems. The initiative is aimed at strengthening the United States' capability to produce critical materials domestically, thereby reducing reliance on complex global supply chains and foreign factories, primarily in China.
The company notes that beyond addressing geopolitical challenges, the biological technology allows for the production of a variety of essential materials from domestic feedstocks with significant energy savings. Planned products for the facility include unique military applications, ranging from a bio-cement mixture produced from soft sand to create stable landing pads for helicopters in the field, to polymer-bonded explosives (PBX) used in Hellfire missile warheads. The biomanufacturing technology operates similarly to brewing fermentation, but involves complex technological challenges. To prevent contamination in the facility's piping, the company uses advanced ultraviolet disinfection systems. This method enables the production of compounds that cannot be synthesized in the
