JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — If you were up before the sun Tuesday morning, you may have seen a large glowing plume in the sky. The otherworldly-looking phenomenon was caused by the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launch out of Cape Canaveral. The rocket launched at approximately 6:33 a.m. and illuminated the sky across many areas of Florida and Georgia, creating what is known as a “jellyfish cloud.” Photo of the jellyfish cloud from Whitney Wissinger in Middleburg (Whitney Wissinger) Action News Jax’s First Alert Meteorologist Trevor Gibbs explains that the jellyfish cloud appears when “the exhaust plume from the rocket and its various gases high in the atmosphere are illuminated by the rising sun.” Such phenomena are only visible when launches occur just before sunrise or just after sunset.
The jellyfish cloud was a sight to behold! If you were able to grab a photo of it, upload your image here so that we may show it on air or online. [DOWNLOAD: Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks] Click here to download the free Action News Jax news and weather apps, click here to
