The Cybertruck has deep Los Angeles County roots. Musk unveiled the futuristic, stainless-steel pickup at Tesla's Design Center in Hawthorne in 2019. Musk said Friday on X that Tesla will wind down Cybertruck production at its Texas factory to “make room for increased Cybercab production.'' The Cybercab is Tesla's two-seat, self-driving electric taxi designed for its Robotaxi service.
It has no steering wheel or pedals because it is intended to operate without a human driver. Tesla began commercially producing the Cybertruck in 2023. The truck drew attention for its angular design and stainless-steel body, and the company promoted it as capable of towing up to 14,000 pounds and withstanding strikes from sledgehammers and firearms. It has since faced recalls involving its rearview camera, pedals and other components. Tesla sold 20,237 Cybertrucks in 2025, down from 38,965 the year before, according to Kelley Blue Book figures.
