SeaWorld San Diego said in a social media post that Cyprus, a 9-year-old male beluga rescued from the shuttered Marineland park in Canada, died after abruptly refusing to eat for two days, reports NBC San Diego.
An ultrasound indicated the whale's intestines weren't working normally and suggested a potentially critical condition, the park noted. Cyprus and two other male belugas, Xavier and Jasper, were transported more than 2,500 miles in specialized cold-water units with animal care staff in August, per NBC. A full necropsy is planned, with findings to be shared with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The other two whales are reported to be stable and adapting to their new environment. KABC notes that four other belugas rescued from Marineland have died at Chicago's Shedd Aquarium.
