The New York State Corrections Officers and Police Benevolent Association — the union representing the state’s corrections officers — announced it will endorse Bruce Blakeman for governor. It comes in the wake of a three-week illegal correction officer strike last year, in which Gov. Kathy Hochul fired 2,000 correction officers who refused to return to work and bolstered staffing in the aftermath with National Guard troops — nearly 3,000 remaining in those positions today.

But the pathway to change in the state’s corrections system is complicated. Also, in the wake of a multi-million-dollar settlement by baby formula maker Abbott Laboratories over alleged bacterial contamination in 2022 at multiple plants, there’s a renewed push in New York to get a bill signed that would set state standards for testing baby food and infant formula.
