A former Dallas Police officer is out on parole after serving seven years of her 10 year sentence. DALLAS — After serving over seven years behind bars, a former Dallas police officer is set to be released on parole. In 2019, Amber Guyger, a white woman, was sentenced to 10 years for the 2018 murder of Botham Jean, a Black man. Guyger, who was a Dallas police officer at the time of the shooting, said she mistook Jean for an intruder when she mistakenly entered his apartment after working what she says was a long shift. Guyger has been serving time at the Christina Melton Crain Unit in Gatesville in Central Texas — in the Killeen-Temple-Fort Hood area.
She was originally scheduled to be released on Sept. 29, 2029, but she’s out three years early. It could have been earlier. Guyger was eligible for parole back in 2024. She filed, but was denied. She filed again this year, and it was approved. Criminologist and law enforcement expert Dr. Alex Del Carmen shares what the next steps could be for the former police officer. “So, I think that what happens typically in cases like that is we see them, that they sort of fade away from public attention,” Del Carmen said. “You know, it’s hard for them to get a job
