The candidates were running to replace Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who decided to run for U.S. Senate instead of seeking reelection. TEXAS — Democrat Nathan Johnson defeats Republican Mayes Middleton in the race for Texas attorney general. Middleton and Johnson, who are both state senators, faced runoff elections in May to become the Republican and Democratic candidates, respectively. Middleton beat out U.S. Rep. Chip Roy, R-Austin, and Johnson defeated Joe Jaworski, the former mayor of Galveston. Johnson’s victory flips the seat, making it the first time a Democrat has won the office since 1994.
