Korean War veteran finally receives his Purple Heart, thanks to a new friend

A Korean War veteran was finally presented with the Purple Heart at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Triangle, Va., in front of family, friends, Marines and veterans, marking a long-overdue moment.

A Korean War veteran was finally presented with the Purple Heart more than seven decades after the war. U.S. Marine Corps Brig. Gen. Matthew Tracy, left, the commanding general of Education Command, presents the Purple Heart Medal to former Marine Corps Pfc. Louis J. Mercadente, a 95-year-old Korean War veteran who served with Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines, during a ceremony at the National Museum of the Marine Corps, Triangle, Va., Oct. 30, 2026. (Joshua Barker/U.S. Marine Corps) TRIANGLE, Va. — While grocery shopping in Pittsburgh one day, Mike Nickles spotted Marine veteran Louis Mercadante wearing a Battle of Chosin Reservoir hat. He stopped to thank him for his service, and the two ended up talking for nearly an hour.

They kept in touch and met for lunch every few weeks. During one of their conversations, Nickles learned Mercadante had never been formally presented with the Purple Heart for wounds he sustained during the Korean War more than 75 years ago. After learning this, Nickles spent the following months advocating for Mercadante, including writing a letter to the Marine Corps commandant, Gen. Eric M. Smith, to ensure the Marine Corps formally presented him with the medal. Nickles said his father, a Vietnam veteran, gave him a personal connection to those who served, which motivated him to help Louis Mercadante
