A man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after exchanging gunfire with Denver police responding to a domestic-violence call Friday night. Police were dispatched to a home in the 1300 block of East 33rd Avenue about 7:39 p.m. after a neighbor reported a domestic violence disturbance, Deputy Chief Aaron Sanchez said in a news briefing Friday night. The incident occurred across the street from the Cole Arts and Science Academy in Denver’s Cole neighborhood. The officers, standing on a landing outside the home, spoke with a man in the home, whom they suspected of domestic violence, for about 20 minutes.
The officers “felt the suspect was stalling,” but the conversation “wasn’t extremely hostile,” Sanchez said. The man then shot at officers from inside the home, and officers retreated for cover. The man shot again, and seven officers shot back. The exchange of gunfire lasted several minutes, Sanchez said. “There were several different volleys,” he said. “There were a lot of shots exchanged.” About 8:30 p.m., a woman came out of the home and told police the man had killed himself, Sanchez said. One officer was minorly injured in the exchange, Sanchez said, either from shrapnel or a gunshot.
