Melbourne weather service meteorologist explains Brevard flooding  Florida Today

At the National Weather Service station in Melbourne, it's all hands on deck when Brevard County has severe weather. Meteorologists hover over radar imagery and make decisions over issuing those flood advisories that get sent to smartphones across the county, warning residents to watch out for extremely dangerous and life-threatening conditions that have persisted since early Monday. According to the afternoon forecast discussion for Monday, portions of southern Brevard County will get up to 16 to 22 inches in total between Melbourne and Grant-Valkaria as of Monday, Nov. 2. Roads have been flooded, water mains have broken and the damage caused by the heavy rainfall is still being assessed. This kind of unnamed system impacting the Space Coast is not unheard of but rarely is it this extreme, said warning coordination meteorologist Will Ulrich.

In the following interview, Ulrich breaks down exactly what is causing the severe weather event: The National Weather Service has a really important mission of protecting life and property. We do that through the issuances of watches, warnings and advisories. So if your cell phone goes off for a flood warning or tells you there's high rip currents or tells you it's going to be really hot today so there's a heat advisory out, those are all coming to you from your local NWS forecast office.
