Texas House candidates talk taxes, education and data centers ahead of Tarrant County midterms Fort Worth Report
Five candidates from six contested races appeared at a Fort Worth Report forum ahead of the election. A handful of candidates seeking to represent Tarrant County in the Texas House of Representatives say they want to give residents a voice in Austin and tackle the pressing issues facing local communities, with the foremost concern being affordability. Candidates discussed the relationship between state and local control in governing property taxes, public education, data centers and housing affordability Thursday evening during a public forum hosted by the Fort Worth Report, KERA and League of Women Voters of Tarrant County. The Republican and Democratic nominees for Texas House Districts 92, 93, 94, 97 and 98, as well as Texas Senate District 9, were invited to participate.
Five of the 12 candidates attended the event held at Texas Wesleyan University: Each of the five candidates agreed on a need to provide tax relief for residents. Gov. Greg Abbott has proposed several measures aimed at cutting property taxes, including putting caps on local government spending, allowing voters to approve tax rate increases, placing caps on property appraisal growth and eliminating the school homestead property tax.
