Three years after Oct. 7, North Carolina’s Jewish community gathers to remember Spectrum News
Charlotte's Jewish community came together to mourn, remember and call for awareness as antisemitism rises. CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Jewish communities across the world are mourning loved ones who were killed on October 7, 2023. It's been three years since the Hamas terrorists broke into Israeli communities and killed more than 1,200 people while also taking 251 hostages into Gaza. Yair Brenner was in Israel that day, celebrating Simchat Torah, a Jewish holiday. "I was out with our sons celebrating with the community. And slowly things started to move and all the voices talking about something big that's happening down south, and then everything, I mean, everything shut down. All the synagogues, everything closed down,” Brenner said.
"Went into the shelter and stayed for a little while, tried to communicate with friends and family,” Brenner said. North Carolina communities are having ceremonies of their own Wednesday, like this one that Brenner attended in Charlotte. "You know, it's difficult to separate what happened on October 7 and all of the politics and world events that we might disagree passionately on. But today is a day to remember what happened and to educate yourself and step back and wonder if there is a way that you can support the Jewish community in any way, shape or form.
