Veterans: The outdoors is still calling

Hey, Veteran. You’ve heard the soft advice. “Touch grass.” You didn’t hold a line at 0300 so someone could tell you to go pet a lawn. Forget touching grass. Go touch the whole mountain — the river, the ridgeline, the open water, the wide American outdoors. It’s still out there, and there is still a place for you in it.
America can.
America has never been defined by the mountains it refused to climb. When something is labeled impossible, Americans roll up their sleeves and say, Watch, and get to work. You understand that because you have lived it—you were the “can.” When the nation needed someone to do the hard thing far from home, you raised your hand.
That capability didn’t expire when you took off the uniform. The resilience that helped you carry a ruck up some nameless hill is waiting to carry you up the next one. Nature asks one thing, the same thing it always has: show up.
America has.
This country has endured hardship, rebuilt and moved forward. Veterans have helped make that possible. When freedom needed carrying, it was carried — on your back, on your watch. You are not a bystander to America’s story. Your service is part of it. If you’ve already survived what you’ve survived, the quiet challenge in front of you isn’t bigger than you. It just feels bigger because you’ve been facing it alone. You don’t have to anymore.
Across the country there are Veteran hikes, fishing trips, equine programs, adaptive sports, service dogs — people who wore the same cloth and get it without a word.
America will.
Can is the belief. Has is the proof. Will is the part you write yourself. The only real question left is personal: what will you do? Taking that ground doesn’t need perfect gear or the perfect weekend. Sometimes the next right step is small: a morning walk where you finally look up. A line in the water where your mind stops running. One small yes, then the next.
The moment your boots hit the trail, something settles. That feeling isn’t gone — it’s been waiting, patient as a mountain.
Your move, Veteran.
