North Carolinians voted in favor of three constitutional amendments targeting voter ID, income taxes and property taxes in Tuesday’s midterm election. CHARLOTTE — North Carolinians voted in favor of three constitutional amendments targeting voter ID, income taxes and property taxes in Tuesday’s midterm election. The issues on the ballot covered topics from voter ID requirements to how much money would come out of your paycheck. While unofficial tallies indicate the amendments will be implemented statewide, some of the changes will still require action by state lawmakers. The first amendment on the midterm ballot expands the state’s constitutional photo ID requirement to include voters casting absentee ballots by mail.
Voters also approved lowering the maximum allowable state income tax rate from 7% to 3.5%. That doesn’t automatically lower what you pay today. The state’s current income tax rate is 3.99%, but the rate is scheduled to fall to 3.49% next year, 3.24% in 2030, and 2.99% in 2033. The third amendment requires state lawmakers to establish limits on how much local governments can increase property tax levies. The legislature will still have to determine those limits. The passing of these amendments will formally alter the state’s constitution. The next step is certifying those results, and for some of the changes, determining how they’ll be implemented moving forward.
