Voters extend 1-mill school tax in Duval, Clay, Nassau counties News4JAX
Voters in Duval, Nassau and Clay counties voted to extend the 1-mill property taxes that help fund their local school districts for the next four years. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Voters in Duval, Nassau and Clay counties voted to extend the 1-mill property taxes that help fund their local school districts for the next four years. The measures each renewed an existing tax; they did not create a new one. One mill equals $1 for every $1,000 of taxable property value — or $300 a year on a home with a taxable value of $300,000. The measure is separate from Amendment 3, a statewide property tax change that voters narrowly passed. School district property taxes are exempt from Amendment 3’s overhaul.
Duval’s ballot language said the money will support teacher, security and staff compensation, academic programs, arts, athletics and student activities. State law requires districts to share a portion with charter schools; Duval keeps 81% of the funds, with charter schools receiving 19%. DCPS Superintendent Christopher Bernier sent out a statement after the approval. I am overwhelmed with gratitude to Duval voters for their continued investment in our educators and our children. The renewal of the millage referendum sends a clear and powerful message: our community believes in and supports Team Duval as we continue building the world-class education system our
