When factoring in an additional 48,500 indirect jobs, the hospital sector accounts for 15.2% of total employment in West Virginia. The report notes that the state's gross domestic product sits at approximately $106.5 billion annually, with hospitals generating a net economic benefit of $19.1 billion, or 17.9% of the total. The $1.19 billion community benefit figure is compiled using a national standard set by the Catholic Health Association. It encompasses $204 million in provider taxes paid by hospitals to help fund the West Virginia Medicaid program, $689 million in Medicare and Medicaid payment shortfalls
