Chapter 35 VA benefits can help eligible students cover housing costs, but not in the way many families expect. The Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance program, known as DEA or Chapter 35, doesn't provide a separate monthly housing allowance. Instead, eligible spouses and children receive a monthly education payment directly from the Department of Veterans Affairs. That money can then be used toward expenses connected with attending school, including rent and other living costs. The distinction matters because Chapter 35 is often compared with the Post-9/11 GI Bill, which can include a dedicated monthly housing allowance for qualifying students. DEA works differently. There is no additional housing check on top of that amount. The current rates remain in effect through September 30, 2026.
