CHARLESTON, W.Va. — West Virginia hospitals contributed nearly $1.19 billion in total community benefits while driving $19.1 billion in economic impact across the state, according to the annual community benefit A new West Virginia Hospital Association report says the state's hospitals contributed nearly $1.19 billion in community benefits and generated $19.1 billion in economic impact while employing nearly 57,000 workers statewide. CHARLESTON, W.Va. — West Virginia hospitals contributed nearly $1.19 billion in total community benefits while driving $19.1 billion in economic impact across the state, according to the annual community benefit report released by the West Virginia Hospital Association. The statewide report highlights that hospitals directly employ nearly 57,000 workers, accounting for 8.2% of the state's workforce, and pay $4.78 billion in direct wages and benefits.

When factoring in an additional 48,500 indirect jobs, the hospital sector accounts for 15.2% of total employment in West Virginia. The report notes that the state's gross domestic product sits at approximately $106.5 billion annually, with hospitals generating a net economic benefit of $19.1 billion, or 17.9% of the total. The $1.19 billion community benefit figure is compiled using a national standard set by the Catholic Health Association. It encompasses $204 million in provider taxes paid by hospitals to help fund the West Virginia Medicaid program, $689 million in Medicare and Medicaid payment shortfalls
