Volunteers to visit Avon veterans for outreach  Enterprise News

Avon veterans will be visited by community volunteers during a Sept. 26 outreach effort designed to connect former service members with information about benefits, health care and other support services. The program is being organized by Sheriff Patrick McDermott, the Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office and the Town of Avon’s Veterans’ Service Office, according to a community announcement. The veterans-focused "House to House for Heroes" initiative brings volunteers directly to veterans’ homes to share information about resources available to those who served in the military. The event will begin at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 26 with a kickoff ceremony at VFW Post 8892, 263 E. Main St. in Avon. After the ceremony, volunteers will receive assignments and begin visiting homes across the community.

McDermott said the outreach effort has increased awareness of resources available to veterans while also creating opportunities for residents to learn more about the military service of neighbors in their communities. “House to House for Heroes has proven to be an effective way to raise awareness in the veteran community about the resources and financial support available to them,” said Sheriff McDermott. “It’s also proven to be an incredible way for volunteers to learn about the patriotic service and dedication of the veterans in their neighborhoods through one-on-one meetings at veterans’ doorsteps.” Volunteers will distribute informational packets containing guidance
