Two teenage girls whom police were chasing after a shoplifting call were hit and killed as they tried to cross U.S. 59 on foot Thursday night. Officers first received a report of a shoplifter at an Old Navy store in the 5000 block of Westheimer, near Post Oak Boulevard, Houston Police Department Assistant Chief James Bryant told OnScene TV. The girls were 15 and 16 years old, police said in a Friday afternoon news release. "They attempted to make a traffic stop on the vehicle at South Rice Avenue and Westpark Drive.

At that time the vehicle refused to stop and a pursuit started." Bryant described the suspect vehicle as a dark Chevy Tahoe. The vehicle traveled onto the northbound lanes of U.S. 59 and struck another vehicle as the driver approached Interstate 45. All four female occupants of the Tahoe got out of the vehicle and ran west across U.S. 59 southbound, police said. The two girls who died were struck by a Ford Explorer and Honda CRV.
