July 21st, 2026 Severe Weather  National Weather Service (.gov)

Multiple rounds of moderate to locally heavy rain will impact portions of the Appalachians and Mid-Atlantic, which may lead to flash flooding concerns. Thunderstorms with isolated severe wind gusts will be possible this afternoon from parts of the Southeast into the southern and central Appalachians. A multi-day heavy rain will pose a flash flood threat in New Mexico beginning Tuesday. Read More > A line of strong to severe thunderstorms developed ahead of a cold front, pushing southeast across southern Indiana and Kentucky during the afternoon and evening hours on July 21st, 2026. Ahead of the cold front, a potent environment was present as high heat and humidity combined with unseasonably strong vertical wind shear to create a favorable environment for severe weather.

A mixture of supercell thunderstorms and bowing line segments moved across the region, producing damaging winds, isolated large hail, and a couple tornadoes. While most instances of damage were brief and localized, a few longer swaths of straight-line wind damage and a long-track tornado were observed. Select a tornado from the table to zoom into the track and view more information. The default table view is limited to 8 tracks, but can be scrolled by a mouse wheel or dynamically expanded. Additionally, the table can fill the entire window by clicking the small circular expanding arrow icon
