Three historically Black colleges in North Carolina posted enrollment gains far surpassing the University of North Carolina system average this fall. Winston-Salem State University saw a 5% increase. North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University grew 3%. North Carolina Central University led all system schools with 9% growth.The UNC system saw enrollment increase a little over 1% from last fall. The three HBCUs outpaced that rate.Chancellor Bonita Brown at Winston-Salem State University credits targeted recruitment for the spike. She led a bus tour when she took office in 2024."I literally took one of our wrapped WSSU buses with the band and cheer and the whole admissions department, and we went to high schools all across the state," Brown said, per WFDD.

"And so now we're seeing some of those juniors, who were in the audience, they're now here, because of that experience."Brown pointed to expanded online and graduate degree offerings as factors. She mentioned that HBCU enrollment is climbing across the country.North Carolina Central University in Durham had the highest growth. The 9% jump represents a big win.North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University rounded out the trio. It saw an enrollment increase around 3%.The 2004 recruitment tour that Brown organized visited high schools statewide.
