Starting today, drivers will no longer get a printed registration card or sticker for their license plate after renewing their registration. RALEIGH, N.C. — As of today, the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles is going digital with some services. Drivers will no longer be mailed license plate stickers or printed registration cards. Lawmakers approved the change in the state budget passed in July in an effort to save time, money and prevent fraud. “We’ve had $4.8 million removed from our budget for the printing of the stickers and the mailing of those stickers and registration cards,” said Marty Homan, DMV Communications Director for the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

Most of the process isn’t changing, residents still need to pay fees, taxes and get their car inspected before renewing their registration. The DMV said a reminder will still be mailed 90 days before a registration expires, and drivers can continue to renew their registration online, in person, or at self-service kiosks. After renewing, the registration proof will now be digital. Drivers will have access to a PDF of their registration that can be mailed for a fee, or downloaded to their phone. Drivers can also print out the PDF from home at no cost. For drivers traveling out of state, Homan said the DMV is working with state highway
