A Columbus police officer was injured early Wednesday morning after a vehicle being pursued by the Ohio State Highway Patrol rammed into a police cruiser near downtown. Columbus Police officers were responding to an incident around 1:20 a.m. in the downtown area of I-70 eastbound and I-71 in which OSHP troopers attempted to pull over a vehicle for a lane violation. The driver refused to stop causing state troopers to use the Patrol's Aviation Section to monitor the location of the vehicle instead of having ground units pursue.
The suspect vehicle, a Ford Focus, struck a Columbus police cruiser a short time later at the intersection of West Broad Street and North Central Avenue. One CPD officer was taken to an area hospital in stable condition where he was treated and later released. Two individuals were taken into custody after the crash. OSHP took those individuals into custody and have charged the driver, 19-year-old Ray Crump with felony failure to comply. A representative with the patrol says CPD is continuing to investigate the crash. Video footage of the crash involving a Columbus police officer has been obtained, including body camera
