Czechia Becomes First NATO Operator of Israeli SPYDER Air Defense System  The Defense Post

Czechia has become the first NATO country to introduce the Israeli-made SPYDER air defense system into service, advancing efforts to strengthen and modernize its national air defenses. The country ordered four SPYDER batteries from Rafael in 2021. All four have now been manufactured, with the first two already handed over to Czechia. The systems have been adapted to Czech military requirements and NATO standards, and are undergoing validation tests and interoperability scenarios. SPYDER is intended to form part of a broader, layered Czech air-defense network, with potential future additions including ballistic missile defense, counter-drone interceptors, command and control, and laser-based capabilities. “The introduction of this system represents a significant technological and qualitative advancement in the field of air defense and an important step in building modern, layered protection of our Republic’s airspace,” said Czechian defense minister Jaromír Zůna.

SPYDER Air Defense SPYDER is derived from Rafael’s surface-to-air PYTHON and DERBY air-to-air missiles that operate as part of a multi-layered defense concept. The modular system is designed to intercept several short- to medium-range aerial threats, including aircraft, drones, and precision-guided munitions. While the system is inherently mobile to protect maneuvering ground forces, it can also be deployed in fixed installations. Within Europe, Romania is also procuring the SPYDER system.
