New York Islanders want fans to design their third jersey, so maybe they won't complain this time

The New York Islanders are setting out to do something no NHL team has ever done before, and that’s to toss fans the keys and let them design their next third jersey.

And maybe if they let fans of the team and the NHL in general handle the design, they won’t complain about it this time…

Meh, they probably still will.

ZERO BS. JUST DAKICH. TAKE THE DON’T @ ME PODCAST ON THE ROAD. DOWNLOAD NOW!

The Islanders announced on Wednesday that fans can submit designs for the new jersey, with the winner getting a “VIP gameday experience” during the 2027-28 season, which is when the sweater will debut.

Of course, we’ve seen time and time again that the internet cannot be left to its own devices in moments like this (I’m looking at you, “Boaty McBoatface”), so the team has rolled out a pretty cool jersey design feature on their website using a bunch of templates and logos from throughout the team’s history.

Yes, that includes the infamous “Fishsticks” logos.

WISCONSIN BADGERS JUST ADDED THE PERFECT JERSEY SPONSORSHIP IF THERE IS SUCH A THING

But when it comes to colors, you’re not just stuck with blue, orange, and white. The team is letting fans go crazy with any colors they want.

This is such a great idea, and I love how it feels like the Islanders have just had enough and were like, “You fans think you can do a better job? Go ahead!”

Because the Isles’s third jersey history is not stellar.

Don’t get me wrong, I like the various reincarnations of the Gorton’s fisherman sweaters, but most have been kind of underwhelming.

I liked the black jerseys the team wore at the Barclays Center because it was a bit different, but maybe too plain.

And then there was that weird one they wore from 2011 to 2014 that had black and gray and a wordmark over the player’s number on the front. I’m still not sure what they were going for there.

What were those?!

I’ve liked the Isles’ Stadium Series getups over the years — including the last one that just said “ISLES” across the front — but they need a good third jersey to wear for a few seasons.

Hopefully, fans will cook something up that will be worthy of a historic franchise… but we all know the Fisherman will be on the front of it.
