Northern California Veterans Cemetery hardens perimiter after damage from wild pigs  KRCR

The Northern California Veterans Cemetery saw damage across the property after a series of incursions from wild pigs. Staff took steps to prevent future invasions from the animals and are still working on long-term solutions. Visitors to the cemetery in Igo shared photos on Sept.14, 2026, showing holes and divots dug into multiple sections including above grave sites. Staff confirmed the damage was caused by a large group of wild hogs that had dug underneath the perimeter fencing, allowing them entry. No remains were disturbed by the digging, and all holes have since been refilled and reseeded. To prevent future attempts by the pigs a heavy rock barrier was placed along the fenceline.

As of a week later, no wild pigs were able to regain entry. Work was still underway flattening some sections, but the cemetery remained fully operational. CalVet's Sacramento Office provided the statement below: “The California Department of Veterans Affairs (CalVet) is actively addressing damage caused by wild pigs at the Northern California Veterans Cemetery and taking steps to help prevent future incidents. The wild pigs entered the cemetery by digging and pushing underneath portions of the existing fencing. Cemetery staff have since installed a heavy rock barrier along the fence line, and CalVet is evaluating additional fencing improvements and reinforcement measures to further secure the property. The
