What Austin investigators still haven’t received in the ICE shooting case Austin American-Statesman
U.S. Rep. Greg Casar said local investigators probing the shooting of Wilber Rafael Garcés-Pérez have yet to receive evidence they sought from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. "It is unacceptable that local law enforcement are asking for this key evidence in the shooting case and have so far been denied by the federal government," Casar said at a news conference Thursday after a roughly two-hour congressional hearing in Austin. "This is not transparency; it is obstruction. This is not law and order; this is chaos." Garcés-Pérez, 28, was shot by a federal immigration agent last month in North Austin. The shooting followed a vehicle pursuit that ended when a U.S.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent reportedly rammed Garcés-Pérez's vehicle. An agent then shot Garcés-Pérez near the spine. He was treated at a hospital before being taken to an ICE processing center in Pearsall. Eleven days after the shooting, he underwent surgery to remove the bullet. Casar confirmed Thursday that the identity of the agent who shot Garcés-Pérez remained unknown. "It's unacceptable that the details of the shooting agent are still secret," Casar said. "It is unacceptable that ICE didn't even tell Wilber's wife what hospital he was in a few hours after he was shot." Travis County District Attorney José Garza submitted written testimony for the hearing to U.S.
