CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Mecklenburg County District Attorney Spencer Merriweather is asking the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation to launch a criminal investigation into Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Merriweather says last month he reached out to the SBI to do an “informal” review into reports of allegations of financial irregularities within transactions, and based off that review, the district attorney says he’s now asking the SBI to launch a formal criminal investigation into CMS. “Last month, I asked the NC State Bureau of Investigation to conduct an informal inquiry into reports of alleged financial irregularities within transactions involving Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS), beginning in fiscal year 2026 and into fiscal year 2027.

As a result of that informal inquiry, I have, in my discretion under North Carolina General Statute § 114-14, requested the NC SBI initiate a formal criminal investigation related to those irregularities." He notes that asking for an investigation does not necessarily mean there has been any wrongdoing and does not specify the accusations against CMS.
