COLUMBUS, Ohio — As rising costs and limited resources put more pressure on communities, residents and local groups are taking on a larger role in addressing neighborhood needs. The effort was recognized Saturday at the first Dan Charles Award Brunch, where Columbus resident Tara Mullins-Cosme received the Dan Charles Award for her work in the Ganthers Place, a neighborhood on Columbus’ South Side. Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther said neighborhood residents play an important role in helping city leaders understand where resources and attention are needed. He said each neighborhood has its own necessities, making direct engagement with residents important. “In a city our size, every neighborhood is different.

Everybody’s got different needs and different priorities,” Ginther said. “So the best way for us as a city to serve our residents is staying close to them, staying engaged with them and really following their lead.” Ginther said those efforts also could help bring residents, community organizations and businesses together to address local demands. “They’re not plans that have been dropped in from City Hall,” Ginther said. “Those are the types of plans and guidance that the city needs to galvanize the community, both public and private sector, working together to help make those plans a reality.” Mullins-Cosme’s work in
